TRAMWAY PROFITS

A SATISFACTORY YEAR,

HEAVY EXPENSES, BUT INCREASING R^v'ENUE.

But for the expenditure of £825 due to the Brooklyn accident, and a payment for band instruments—not an item which could ordinarily be set against a tramway maintenance account —the profit from Wellington's tramways last year would have come to £6754, only .£246 short of the estimate. The net profit upon the year’s working was .£5568. The Mayor (Hon. T. W. Hislop) is slightly disappointed because the profit did not come up to the ‘ estimate. He explained that owing to the broken shifts caused by running special care at "rush” times, the traffic expenses were greater than in former years in proportion to income, but when the officers got better acquainted with their work a saving might be effected. Repairs, too, had cost more than usual, but superior materials had been used, and this should check the increased proportion. The main items of revenue and expenditure are given below. Among the expenses was £825 for the Brooklyn accident, which has not been finally dealt with, and £361 for band instruments. The balance of £5563 15s Sd carried to appropriation, account is £l3lO 16s 7d more than the net profit in the previous year. The sum of £1282 19s 6d is written off preliminary expenses, and £2OO in connection with the H.A. trolleyhead patent rights.
