BEYOND GOVERNMENT CONTROL.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright ST. PETERSBURG, April 8. The Finnish Diet was dissolved, as it had got beyond Government control. Fresh elections will be held in July. The intimation that the Finnish Diet has " got beyond Government control is interesting When it is remembered that Finland is the only country with women in Parliament. Alter the Grand Duchy of Finland was ceded to Russia, the powers of self-government were gradually taken away. Three years ago. however, the Czar removed a number of disabilities under which his Finnish subjects suffered, and a National Assembly was established. Every Finnish citizen, male or female, aged 24 years, is entitled to vote and qualified for election. Members 'are paid £66 per annum. The elections took place just, over a year ago. and of the 200 Deputies elected nineteen were women. They include school teachers, a dressmaker, a clergyman’s wife, and a restaurant-keeper. In Helsingfors, the capital city, 55 per cent, of the votes cast were those of women.
