A POPULAR CITIZEN.
ME J. M. JOHNSTON HONOURED. Mr J. M. Johnston, treasurer of the Manawatu A. and P. Association and secretary of the Manawatu Hoeing Club, wile has been appointed to officially represent tho former institution at the Eoyal Agricultural Show in Sydney, will leave for Australia by to-day’s steamer, accompanied by Mrs Johnston. Mr Hector Booth, president of tho Feilding A. and P. Association, and Mr S. Lancaster. vice-president of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, are also going to Sydney with Mr Johnston. In recognition of the generous and untiring enorts ho has put forth in the public interest over a long series of years, 'Mr Johnston has been presented with a purse of over three hundred sovereigns by his friends and admirers in the Manawatu, Kaugitikei and Wellington districts. The puree was handed to the recipient by Mr 11. S. Abraham in the presence of a few of the subscribers. On taking his departure from Palmerston North last night Mr Johnstqu was accorded a great demonstration, numbers of townspeople assembling at the station to cheer him heartily as the train moved off.
