RAILAGE OF TIMBER

Saw millers, as well as all those who wish to see the Wairatrino opened as repidy as its importance warrants, will await with interest the result of the representations being made at present by Sir P. G. Smith, chairman of the Waimarino County Council, to tfce Public Works Department (says tho Taihape “Times”)- As tho result of considerable attention to the subject, Mr Smith left Kaetihi for the purpose of urging upon the department tho necessity for tho fulfilment of the promise made that the working Railways Department will take over the Oha-kuno-Mataroa section of the North Island Main Trunk line next Juno. Although no steps have been taken in that direction so far, Mi* Smith is of the opinion that the promise oau be carried out if expedition is used by the Department. Tho section which is still incomplete is over seven miles in length. The high freight of Is 9d per 100 feet is now charged by the Public Works ,Department, which has had the effect of accumulating largo stocks of timber on the part of the Waimarino mills. When regular traffic is opened under the working xailSrays the charge will be reduced to Od per 100 feet. We have recently pointed out how necessary it is that timber should be allowed all the dispatch possible, bath an account of tho approach of winter, and in order to satisfy tho abnormal demand in Wellington and elsewhere, and we trust that Mr Smith’s representations ‘will obtain the desired result.
