NATIONAL DEFENCE LEAGUE
THE REQUEST FOR RAILWAY PASSES. paras association. O—RISTQHUROH, April 7. In regard to tho request of the National Defence League that delegates should receive free railway passes to the conference in Wellington, tho Hon. R. McNab stated to a press representative to-day that this matter had been referred to him as Minister of
Defence. A suggestion had been made that the ooncession granted should come as a charge on the Defence Department. Before leaving Wellington he had sent a reply that the department was unable to pay the railway expenses of delegates. Even if they were sworn in members of the Defence Force the department oould only pay their expenses in certain oases, such as going to or coming from their duty, and attending at some of tho rifle meetings* In these circumstances he oould not use the defence funds to pay the railway fares of civilians.
