CARE OF CONSUMPTIVES

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SANATORIA.

Dll. MASON’S VIEWS,

AUCKLAND, April 7,

Dr. Mason, lire Chief Health. Officer, who arrived from Wellington to-day, was waited upon by a press representative, ir. reference to the subject of consumptive sanatoria 1 touched upon by a deputation to the Minister for Health in the South. Dr. Mason remarked that the results at Te Waikato Sanatorium, which had been mentioned by the, Minister as a demonstration station, had proved eminently satisfactory. The percentage of cures had been approximately 21, which, considering Ihe general lateness at which eases were received, would compare favourably with the Continental institutions The Dtago Hospital , Board’s suggestion that a sanatorium should bo established in Central Otago by the Government was entirely opposed to the usual policy by which each Beard looked after its nvu sick. The Cambridge institution was a national one, and received from all parts of the Dominion patients who it was believed would benefit by that particular climate.

“I am glad to note,” said the doctor, “that aftor many days Auckland is beginning to realise its responsibilities in this directon. There are at present 11 cases at the Costloy Institute, and I am pleased to see the effort being made by the Board to cope with the nastier. Provision has been made in Taranaki Nelson, Wellington, Whangaroi, Thames, and Invercargill, and Christchurch is carrying out a scheme for the same end. It now only remains for the two centres, Dunedin and Auckland, to fall into line. lam strongly ot the opimon that Auckland should make provisbu for, at leant -50 patients within the district, and thus put an end to the present state of affairs. Of course there is not nearly sufficient accommodation in New Zealand for all consumptive patients, bin the various d:s'tr'Cts, by doing their share, arc gradually increasing it. to meet the requirements.”
