NOTES ON THE MEETING. (By "Advance.") The Manawatu meeting opened in cold, wot weather. A falling-off in the totolisator returns was more than made up in fees from bookmakers, which amounted to .£SOO.

All acceptors .except Claremont and Splendid Idea contested the Hack Hurdles. Concussion fell tit the first fence. Showman had charge for about a mile, and here Aorangi ran to the front and had his opponents settled before reaching the straight, but at the Aist fence in the straight he unseated T. Pritchard. Commander was then in charge. Showman came again and got up in the lost tew strides. The winner is a member of S. Boretou’s Weverley team, ‘and half brother to Sedgebrook, a useful sprinter of a few years back. tvaraka, Truganini, and Crucinella were scratched for the ivtirere Hack Welter. Claremont then ran through and had a good load htelf a mil© from home, where Gold Dust moved up. A slashing finish resulted in favour of the latter. , Prospector fell at the last fence, out horse and rider (C. O’Neill) escaped injury.

King Billy, on the rails, began smartly in the Longburn Handicap, and wn© clear at half way. Waipahu then took chare© and came into the straight with a big advantage, winning with plenty to splire. Tangimoana wore down King Billy in tlio last bit. Uenuku end Tho Lark finished immediately behind the placed horses. Clanchatttm ohaped disappointingly, finishing last. Daisy Paul, Eangihaeta, and Advantage were tho scratchings for the Champion xxack Pltetc. The fiold included three Wellington horses. Wharekura hung to Truganini for half a mile. Yosami and Mon»Ami were the last two to finish. At half way Woodhey ran to the front and utes not afterwards headed, winning in tho easiest manner.
