A. AX.D P. SOCIETY MATTERS. ' PROPOSALS FOR AMALGAMATION. DISCUSSED AT CARTERTON. MASTEUTON. April 7There- was a big attendance at tho Last ta'jotijig ot tho pr*sCut. Goueral < 'omnultee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society at Carterton to-dav, when u motion, notice of which was givon by Mr Quentin Donah], came up for ußcnissiou. Tap motion war that Iho conmiiru-o sdioukl re-c.-ommead lo the annual general meeting' of men/to bo hold a month hence, It.e o uialgamation of tho moiety with tho Mastc-Kon A. find P. with a show at So j way.

Mr Don-ak),* 'in moving his motion, dwelt briefly upon the importance of the mfMjes Iron, a provincial .standpoint. He contended that tho prownt system of two sfxviet.iiM and two shows was an uruiec©?.sary <lrain upon the rer/Ourec-s of tho contributing public, who wore beginning to awaken to that fact. One show meant' better competition In stock, n.oro prize--n.oncv, and general improvement in all raapeets. '['here was an almost universal dc.sn-0 in tho South Wairarapa for theamalgamation. Tie presented a potitiou-; signed by ninety-ouß members of tho soci**tv, praying for amalgamation and a So I wav show, and oaid two other petitions wore ont, and were being largely p’gncd, w'hich would huvo l>oen submitted, but, Mio holders could not get to the meeting. Mr IT. A. Bunny strongly opposed the motion, coate.iuUng that tho matter had not been approached in tho right spirit from the start, and that committees from loth .'itw-oaiaUoivs should have first confer ml on the matter. Ho criticised tho Anancial outlook before tho Masterton As'■ooiation in removing to Solway, declaring that tho scheme as put forward by the special sub-committ-ee of the Masterlon Association condemned itself. On iho face of the report, the speaker said, il; was not even certain whether tho Masterton Association wanted the Wairarapa Society, but it was well known terton wanted the Carterton Society’s, n.-vete. Ho dcclmcd it to bo the wrong 1 method of procedure for tho member of the mdety to canvass other members for support to a scheme which gavethe a stab. Mr U*. Buchanan felt it incumbent <m him to vote againnt tiio proposal. H© said that Mnstorto.n had not boon cononI; lo await developments when there was only one society, and tho present: position the result. He aleo criticised what ho considered a want of business foresight in tho Masterton Association bv the throwing away of .£3OOO, worth'of assote for a paltry estimatedprofit of <£7o per year, and then not holding one acre of freehold property. He held no unfriendly view toward thft Masterton. Association, but ho thought it had made a mistake in removing just at the present juncture. Mr W. Perry strongly supported the motion, and answered at length the various contentions of tho opponents to amalgamation. Speaking very much to tho point, he said he had been disgusted at th© last Carterton show to see such a small attendance of outside visitors, practically none being seen up and down the lines of sheep pens. Having had forty entries, he felt entitled to speak plainly, and said that as a business proposition to exhibitors the show was a failure. Mr A. Anderson considered the best plan -would have been to have appointed sub-committees from each society interested to thrash out the question, but now tho«best course would be to allow the matter to go before tho annual meeting. . Mr A. Matthews, a Lower Valley breeder and an earnest supporter of A. and P. also made a telling spogcli in favour of amalgamation, and brought home.some plain truths regarding tho indifference shown on' previous occasions by the Carterton townspeople to the,., wishes of leading exhibitors to secure amalgamation by swamping the Intter’s vote at tho annual meeting, withtho result that many leading and valuable members had resigned. He averred that Carterton had no reason to criticise the Masterton Association's action in taking on the responsibility of a Solway show, when the Wairarapa Society bad bought a most expensive ground at tho very outset. Some rather acrimonious oroas-firo followed, and the following motion was eventually carried unahimusly:—

That a ballot bo taken at the annual peeling of members on the question of amalgamation with Master ton, the new association to be called the Wairarapa A. and P. Association, with a show at Solway. GENERAL NEWS NOTES. MASTERTON. April 7. There were slaughtered at Masterton abattoirs last month 155 cattle, 10 calves, 868 sheep and lambs, and 87 pigs. Twelve new members were sworn in at the last two parades. Preparations arc now being made by the curator of the Masterton fish hatcheries (Mr J. Miller) and his staff for the spawning season. In spite of tho low state of the rivers Mr Miller anticipates that spawning this year will be qnite up to the usual standard. FEATHERSTON FIRE-FIGHTERS. TYPHOID AT MARTINBOROUGII. (From Our Travelling Correspondent.) FEATHERSTON, April 7.

Foathorston’s fire-lighters arc anile enthusiastic over their first year’s work. Not that they have had many big encrasretaeiito.” They haven’t; only three, but everything points to tho new brigade having a successful and useful career. At present there are nineteen members. The report presented at tho Jirst annual meeting, held last night, showed that, although some .£-10 odd worth of appliances had been purchased during the year, there was still a credit balance of jn. 6s 6d. Captain Check announced that Mr M, N.’ Hardy had given a gold medal, and Sir A. Bungay a silver modal ns prizes for tho smartest coupling work, and it was decided to I old the competition on Slay 7th. MARTI ITBOROTJGH, April 7,

Quito a serious outbreak of typhoid fever is reported hero. During the past week . four oases have occurred, md two others in March. Sir F. McAllum, tho Town Clerk, said to-day that, in his opinion, and Dr Webb’s, the cause of the outbreak was contaminated water after tho drought. "Colour is lent to this assumption,” said Sir McAllum, "by the fact that all the patients came from ono part of the town where there are two septic tanks.”

During tho past month five building permits have been granted, representing £I3OO.

Tho milk supply of tliis district is keeping up fairly well, in spite of the drought, and one at least of the local factories (the Otarnia) will not dose until June, no earlier than usual.
