The Earl of Orowe (Lord President of the Council) has been created a Knight of the Garter in succession to the late Duke of Devonshire. Hie vacancy in the list of Knights of the Thistle caused by the death of the Manjuis of Linlithgow has been filled by the honour being conferred on Lord Twcedmouth (First Lord of the Admiralty).
The Most Noble Order ot the Garter, csl nbllshcd by King Edward 111. in 1343, and re constituted in 1831.' is limited to tlip Sovereign, tbo Prince of Wales, and snob descendants of George I. as may be elected to be membors of it. and to twenty-nve Knight Compauionß; but sovereigns and princes of other realms, as well ns extra Knight Companions, may ho admitted ty special statutes. , n The Most Ancient and Most Nobio Order of the Thistle was established in 154 P, ami subsequently remodelled on occasions, J n 1827 it was declared by statute that <lnr. Order shall consist of the Sovereign and elit’cn Knights.
