FIRE AT MARION

FOUR SHOPS DESTROYED,

PHEES ASSOCIATION. MABTON, December 4.

The second big firo within the last month broke out in Martou about tv.c o'clock to-day, totally destroying J. M. Niool'o shop, refreshment roome, and bake-house, and the promisee of B. U. Goebel, fruiterer and produce merchant; J. Milligan, crockery and ironmongery store; and Max Bornhold, jewellers shop and dwelling. The water supply was cut off temporar. ily, and when the brigade got to work Niool’s building, where the fire started, was a mass of flames. The brigade worked splendidly, and saved several ad*, joining buildings. The insurances are:—Nicol’s .£250 in the Alliance; shop (owned by Mrs Nicol, senior), £3OO in the Liverpool and London' and Globe; Goebel's stock, £SO in the Now Zealand office; shop (owned by A. H. Sutcliffe), £3OO in the Liverpool and London and Globe; Milligan's stock, £350 in the Commercial Union; shop (owned by A. H. Sutclilfc), £SOO inthe Liverpool and London and Globe; Born hold's stock and furniture, £530 in the State office; shop and dwelling £4OO in the Now Zealand office.

OTHER FIRES. NAPIER., December 4. - A firo broke out about 5:30 Una event ing in the upstairs portion of the promises of J. M. Phillips, confectioner., Hastings street. The firo had a good hold when discovered, and Phillips's place was gutted. Of his furniture and stock very little was saved. Rice, confectioner, Prebblc,' fruiterer, and Hannah and Co., boot importers, all had their stocks damaged by water, while the up. per portion of Rice’s shop was also gutted.

PMliips'e furniture, stock, and shop fittings, etc., were insured for £4OO, and his household furniture for £IOO, but his loss will bo about £7OO over that amount. Mr Phillips and his family were away at on entertainment whon.tha fire broke out. The cause of the fire is unknown.

ASHBURTON, December 4. A new five-roomed house in Hampstead, valued at £260, owned by Mrs Susannah Tasker and occupied by J. Roddington, was destroyed by fire lost night. _ Nothing was saved. Tho house uua insure< for £163 in the State office, and the fur niture for £75 in the Norwich Union.
