FARM LABOUR AND WAGES.

DISPUTE IN CANTERBURY,

PRESS ASSOCIATION. TIMARTJ, December 3. The bearing'of the farm labour dispute was resumed to-day by the Conciliation. Board. Robert Guthrie, a grazing run-holder, and a member of the Mackenzie County Council, gave evidence on his experience of thirty years as shepherd, manager, and run holder. He said that hut accommodation for musterers ought to be .multiplied and better arrangements made for feeding them. Wages paid now in hill country were about equal to those 'demanded. He condemned the union proposals to abolish tho co-operative family by making fathers pay their sons union wages, to nx hours tor shepherds, to do away.with contract work, and to compel preference to unionists. These things were impracticable in tho backoountry. Henry Thomas Day/ aged sixty-five, a day labourer on farms at Temuka, said hia pay, 6s fid a day, was not enough for a man with a family. He disapproved of piece-work, as involving a tendency to sweating; but he could not say how men whonr farmers would not engage at day rates were to get on. P. J. Keane, aged thirty, a general farm hand, supported tho demands, though in a public address some months ago he derided the holidays and fixed hours demanded. ‘He would abolish piece-work except in shearing, A MAGNIFICENT MEDICINE FOE WOMEN.
