SURVEYORS’ INSTITUTE.

Th© meeting of the Council of the Institute of Surveyors: held yesterday, was attended by Mr James McKorrow (president), Hon. G. F- Richardson, Messrs J. Strauchou, F. I. Ledger (Nelson), H. G. Wylde (Palmerston North), J. E. Fulton, R. Garrett (Wanganui), A. P. Mason, and H. Slaaden. Tbe letter which was sent by th© president to th© Surveyors’ Institute of Brisbane with reference to the preparation of papers for the March examination was road. In it Mr McKerrow remarked on the numerous failures at the September examination, ’when out of forty-five candidates throughout Australasia only sax passed. This unsatisfactory result might in some measure be duo to the present examination process, and pending consideration of the whole question at the next conference th© Institute thought something might be done in th© following direction: —(1) That the highly technical questions set for an examination should have a practical bearing on surveying; (2) that every question should clearly state what was required to be done; (3) that each examination paper should contain only such number of questions as could b© reasonably dealt with in the time allowed. Th© statement of finances showed cash on deposit £200; at the bank £76 Bs, this being a considerable im- ■ provement on the previous year.' An increase was made in th© salary of th© secretary (Mr C. D. Morpeth), It was resolved on th© motion of the president that a. letter of condolence be sent to Lady Hector and family, th© late Sir James Hector having been one of th© two honorary members of the Institute.
