GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

PLAY IN THE. SEMI-FINAL, A. DUNCAN AND LUSK TO PLAY OFF. PRESS ASSOCIATION. NAPIER, September 15. At the New Zealand Golf Club's ohampionshin meeting, which was continued or. Saturday, the chief interest centred in th© semi-final round of the amateur championship of Now Zealand, which was played in the afternoon. In the round between Lusk and Barnford, the latter was evidently very nervous, and Lusk got away at the start, and maintained his lead throughout. Tho round was a very uninteresting one. When Arthur Duncan and H. C. Smith took their places was a small thrill of excitement amongst the spectators to see how tho latter would shape against his redoubtable opponent. Smith was manifestly nervous, and at the start played below his form, and lost the first four holes. He then pulled himself together, and halved the , next throe holes, and won the two following holes in good style. Then on© hole was halved. Duncan got tho next two, then Smith one, Duncan one, and the fifteenth was halved, this leaving Duncan 5 up and 3 to play. Had Smith played from the start as he did towards the latter part of the round, it would have been, a really good game. To show Duncan's great consistency, it may be mentioned that he did tho first nine holes in 38, this being proportionately equal to his record-breaking score in the fourth round between the brothers Arthur and Ken Duncan, in which the former played brilliantly, making only one bad stroke, which did not affect his score. Art incident is recalled when th© same two brothers met in the final of the championship • In Auckland in 1806. Both wore playing carefully and well, and neither had obtained a lead of more than 2 up. At the seventeenth hole Ken Duncan made th© score ail square, and th© 'greatest excitement prevailed while th© last hole was played. Both got in good drives, but irf the approach Arthur went wide. Luckily for him, the ball struck an adjacent tree, and landed on the green. Ken was on tho green with the same number of strokes, but Arthur beat him in the put. To lose the championship by one. put was the consistent Ken’s experience. Since then Arthur Duncan has improved out of all knowledge, and when playing up to hie form can easily dispose of his brother. It is contended by many that his play is unequalled in the colony.
