AUCKLAND, September 14. Tairua Broken-Hills obtained bullion worth .£1685 from 323 tons of ore. In a paper dealing with gold dredging in Russia, which appeared in the ‘'Mining Journal" (.London,),, a. writer "It is not long since the dredging business began to develop—just sorae nve or six years ago. At the present- time, in Siberia and in the Urals, there’are about forty dredges at work, ; and there are about ten now building. It would apipear as though all the advantages were oh the side of the foreigner, and that the duty-free entry, the production in quantities, the high technique, cheap money, etc,, would enable the foreign manufacturers to completely conquer the Russian market with their dredges. Meantime, however, the’, reality shows just the reverse. Of the whole forty dredges at: work in Russia, ’ only' ton or twelve were built - broad—by' Marshall and Sons, of Gainsborough, England, and the ■ Conrad Shipbuilding Yards of Holland, [etc.—but the rest have been exclusively i built in Russian * shops * And this is : shown, further, by the fact that the Russian factories that built dredges (the ' Putiloff Works,’St. Petersburg, the NeI viansk and • Brothers Korbeinoff, Eka{terinburg) have displayed remarkable 'initiative and energy in-pushing - their specialties, carefully ascertaining, the re- ! quirements of the market- and. constructI ine the best types; and, above all, in extending the easiest possible terms of I credit which these factories have grantled to their clients. The Putiloff factory has been particularly enterprising in 'this respect, and has constructed■ in a i brief period, of time some ten dredges, I costing about 150,000. to 170,000 roubles each." We understand that the first I four dredges built for Siberia were built in New Zealand by Messrs A., and T. Burt, of Wellington and Dunedin.;
