FRUIT AND PRODUCE.

Suppliers of local fruits during tho whole of this week have been particularly light, but offerings had a particularly strong outlet. From now until early in October the market will have to roly upon outside sources for practically all its requirements. On Wednesday . 4500 packages of Sydney fruit arrived, but as this quantity was far in excess of what was required, values ruled at disastrous levels, and, with the exception of passions and pines, which were in small supply, must have resulted in losses to shippers. No doubt New South Wales consignors looked at the fact of such a large quantity being sent over to this side as giving relief to their own immediate outlets, which would rise ‘in sympathy. Brokers in Wellington complain bitterly of the high charges attendant upon any fruit which may be condemned to fumigation on arrival, and as a result shippers prefer to have their fruit fumigated before shipment in Sydney, whether there is any sign of scale or not, at the nominal cost there enforced. Grapes are ruling at high figures with a good demand. New Zealand lemons are in poor inquiry, owing to excessive shipments of Sydney grown to hand. Best local dessert apples (coloured; 10s to 11s, prime 8s to 9s, good and inferior 4s to 7s case, cookers (prime best) 9s to IDs, good 7s to Bs, medium and inferior 3s to 6s case, Tasmanian (choice coloured dessert) 13s to 14s, cookers 7s to 9b 6d case, lemons (local) 2s to 3s, hothouse tomatoes demand strong at Is to Is 9d per ib, grapes 2s to 2s fid per Ib. POTATOES AND ONIONS, There is no sign of the recent depression in the local market easing. Southern as well as other districts are still well to the fore with supplies,, and values have not Improved. Yesterday 200 gunnies of onions arrived by the Warrimoo. As the demand has strengthened lately and only the moderate quantity just indicated will. have, to meet the coming week's requirements, prices will doubtless rise. OTHER VEGETABLES. The market opened weakly, but towards the close cauliflowers advanced several shillings per sack; other lines are in poor demand. Cabbages, 5s to 6b for choice, good and inferior 3s to 4s; cauliflowers, best 6s to 8s sack, prime 4s to ss, inferior 2s fid to 3s fid; parsnips, 3s to 4s 6d sack; lettuce, 2s to 3s fid case; green peas, Is fid to 2s peck; marrows, 4s to 5s sack; rhubarb, 7s to Bs, large bundles; cucumbers (hothouse), 9d to Is; tomatoes.
