A CHANGE WANTED, NEW CALEDONIAN SETTLERS’ PETITION. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright SYDNEY, September 13. A petition is being signed in New Caledonia urging the French Government to band the isiand over to Great Britain. The petitioners believe that if the isiand was under England it would soon acquire autonomy. The, paper “France Austral©” ridicules the petition, but warns France that she has crushed the dependency by imposts beyond its resources, and may lose her colonies, as Spain did. COMPLAINT BY MISSIONARIES. CHARGES AGAINST A BRITISH RESIDENT. , MELBOURNE, September 13. Presbyterian missionaries attdtSied to the Victorian Church in the New Hebrides are dissatisfied with- the administration q£ Captain Rason, British Resident. They consider he is unjust and unfair to the natives, and assert that he will not allow native teachers to have any land in dispute on any island that they own.
