Murray, and Ito juaxic preliminary arrangements for noiojng an inquiry into the allegations a- ( play mad© against the Auck--7 amt xer wards in the Otago and Canterjuj - matches. Interviewed regarding the allegations of rough play, every member of tho team denied that unnecessary roughness had been exhibited on tho tour. They had only played a hard, strenuous game in their endeavours to win, but anything like intentional roughness was absent. “I put tho Southern complaints down to a difference in the styles of play," isaid one of the two men who was ordered o ft. Down there they don't think a forward should collar a back, and they get quite offended if ho does. Our play was not rough. We played the game as hard and as well as we could, but did not import any roughness into it." "1 was line umpire in the Otago match," said another forward, "and I had to watch the gam© closely. Thor© was no unfair play in the whole game. Our men played exactly the game they have done in the club matches here all through the season."

Another leading forward expressed the opinion that the Southern players seemed to bo of tho glass-house order. Tho Aucklanders were unfairly treated by the crowd, both in Dunedin and Christchurch, and when .Logan ' was carried off in the former place they whistled the "Dead March," and started cheering. Tho referees seemed to be influenced by tho crowd, and to be guided by.their hooting.
