HOROWHENUA HACK RACING CLUB. (By Our Special Reporter.) The annual meeting of the Horowhenua Hack Racing Club opened at Weraroa yesterday. Rain fell early in the morning, mating the going heavy, and showers fell at intervals throughout the day. The attendance was about up to the average. Several horses in attendance at the meeting were withdrawn on account of the state of the track. Proceedings opened with tho Flying Hack Handicap. All Red, Wakaraka, and Rangipapa were missing from the starting-board. Tho Hutt-trained Saga, who put up a couple of creditable gallops at Marton, was installed favourite, and won easily. Gold Crest was the only scratching for the Park Stakes. Mahuta ran a good race considering the going, and the fact that it was his first appearance, but St. Claimer beat him comfortably at the finish. Toa Tuhi did the best preliminary, but shut up quickly at the distance. The Maiden Hack Race introduced Bunyan (half-brother to Nova), trained by F. Tilley at Fordell. For looks, he was in a class by himself, > and settled the moderate opposition without difficulty. Flotilla and Mahoe were withdrawn from the Cup, the good field of eleven starting. Tangimoaua mad© play from the start, but was tho first beaten. William and Hiro then took a hand. In the straight half-a-dozen horses -were in line. Hiro lasted long enough to win by a narrow margin. Hiro failed twice at Marton, and was the biggest outsider of tho eleven runners. He is a member of P. Coffey's Trentham team. Ten started for the Welter Hack Handicap, Rendrock and Belario being withdrawn. Clem was saddled up again, but ran in the rear most of the way. At half-way Gauze was second last, but she made ground in the last two furlongs, and got up in time to beat Truth■ful.

All the acceptors started for the Hack Hurdles. As at Marton, Compass lost a lot of ground at the fences, otherwise ho would have troubled Playmate, who won fairly comfortably. The Electric Hack Handicap brought out a field of fifteen. Naumai, a mem-, her of C. Pritchard's Hutt team, got a break, and won from end to end. Naumai and Tawhera, who finished third, are both by the Waikanae sire Conqueror, whose Welcome Stakes performance still stands as tho Australasian record.
