REBELLIOUS SAILORS

DISSATISFIED WITH THEIR FOOD. PRESS ASSOCIATION, WANGANUI, September 10. An interesting case was beard at the Police Court to-day. Four sailors on the Oreti were charged with absenting themselves without leave. The evidence showed that the men, dissatisfied with their breakfast on Friday morning, told the captain they would finish Up. They went ashore, and as they did not return the steamer was unable to sail. Captain Robertson contended that the men oonld only give twenty-four hours notice at the pprt of discharge, viz., the port at which their articles wore signed—in this case, Wellington. The Magistrate upheld this, and sentenced Wilson, the ringloader, to seven days' imprisonment, and ordered the others to forfeit two days’ wages. He subsequently cancelled Wilson’s imprisonment, and put him on the same footing as the others. Leave was given to appeal in order to settle the point as to whether men can leave at a port other than that of final discharge.
