SALE OF PAINTINGS

An aft sal© of more than usual interest is to be held at Macdonald, Wilson and Co.’o rooms on Friday, at 2 o’clock. The collection comprises some seventy odd pic* lures, the largest number being from theeasel of Mr .1 D. Perrett, an artist whose, work is widely known not only in Australia and Now Zealand, but is also known and has won appreciation in the United Kingdom, whore his colour conceptions have been warmly praised. Among the oils now on view there are some productions of conspicxtoua-merit. Standing out prominently is "Mount Cook from Lake Pukaki.” •which is a fine picture of the monarch oi the Alps, painted in'a broad, free style, with a masterly grip -of colour effect. The snow is admirably depicted, and the contrast of this with the sombre shade© of m middle distance arc extremely happy. This, and other pictures by Mr Perrett, should materially enhance his reputation. His; colour effects are particularly mellow and unrestrained, and the effect of distance and general grandeur and loveliness of the scenes arc well brought home. Evening of a Grey Day. Lake Te Anau,” is a beautiful colour scheme, and Is one of the gems of the collection. "Lake Mapourika” and "Harrison’s Cove. Milford Sound” also stand out prominently. In the pastel work, in which medium Mr Perrett excels, and which is characterised by beautiful colour and effective draughtsmanship. and is characteristically soft and delightful in every way to those who enjoy art contemplation on the nearer vision, may be specially mentioned "Grey Dav, Mi ford Sound.” "Lake Manapouri.” "Head of Lake "Wakatipu.” "Clinton River." and "Wanganui River.” Mr Perrett'a collection is very varied and will please art lovers. The dominant feature of his work is the treatment of early morning and evening effects. There are a great many fine examples by artists of the highest reputation, amongst which are some beautiful Maori studies by Edward Fristrom, and also some landscapes by the same artist which are rich in 'colour and clever in technique. By •jignor Nerli there are some very clever water-colour studies 'of Italian scenery, also an "Australian Aboriginal.” which is vigorous in drawinc and in colour. There are a number of'valuable water-colour sketches and pencil drawings of great excellence by Clarkson Stanfield. Nicholas Francois Halpbo 'born Copenhagen 1827). .-• ay. engraver of Raphael • cartoons—artist of the very highest reputation. The whole collection is one which art lovers should not fall to inspect. The pictures are now on: view at the rooms prior to being sold on Friday, and will, we.unuerstand, be sold practically without reserve.
