MAIL SUBSIDIES.
COMMISSION OF INQUIRY. SYDNEY, January 19. In hia evidence before the Royal Commission of Inquiry into mail subsidies, Air Anderson, chairman of the Orient Company, said ho did not think tho Government could run mail steamore as cheaply a* a private company. Tho Orient Pacific Company had absolutely no preference for miionjst* or non-unionists, and had never refused employment to sober British firemen. In employing Lascars as against white men, tho company had boon inilucnccd by a dcsiro for constant efficiency. Mr Anderson declared that the carriage of refrigerated cargo was nnrenmnerativo under present conditions. Ho estimated that tho company paid sorao £lO-1,000 ycaly In Canal dues.
