The Mayor (Hon T. W. Hislop), Councillors D. McLaren, W, H. Morrah, T. Ballinger. E. Cohen, A. S. Biss, A. E. Gibbs, James Trevor, C. 11. Izard, T. Carmichael, and A. H. Hindmaish were present at the fortnightly meeting of the City Council last evening. The By-laws, Eire Brigade, and Lighting Committee recommended that the license of a eabdriver. fined for drunkenness, ho suspended for one month. Tho Baths and City Reserves Committee recommended that all popons encroaching on the Town Belt at Shannon street be called upon to put thenfences back to the proper boundary. That the Wellington Benevolent Institution be granted a twelve months’ lease of the Town Belt at Ohiro road, in front of their property, at a rental of .£4 per annum. That owing to the small number of ladies likely to use tlic baths, the Thorndon Baths cannot be placed at the disposal of ladies on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, as suggested'at tire last Council meeting. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee recommended that the section of land in Victoria street, lately leased to Mr John Hutcheson, he again put up for tender. The committee recommended that Messrs Ballinger Bros, be granted a new lease of sections of reclaimed land hold by them in Waring Taylor and Magi unity streets at an increased rental of 150 per cent., tho brick portion of tlic building, now partly standing on the land, to bo added to, and the wooden portions renewed in brick within eighteen months oi the expiration of tlic present lease. Chapman bo granted new leases of sections of reclaimed land held by them in Brandon street, at an increased rental of 150 per cent., new building to he erected within five years. MELROSE IMPROVEMENTS COMMITTEE. Tho committee recommended that the necessary steps bo taken to declare tlie undermentioned to be public streets, and that the money set apart for tho purpose on the Melrose Improvements Schedule bo expended on repairs thereto, viz., Jrloughton Bay road, Buckley street, Hadlield street, Holloway mid, .Melrose street, and Jackson road, and Clomncll road. THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION.

The Mayor said that some difference had apparently arisen between the Advisory Board and the Commissioners of tho Christchurch Exhibition as to the amount of money that should be paid to the local secretary, and it was suggested that the local bodies should pay the requisite, sum. He moved that as the Government had taken the matter in hand it should be loft to them to see it through.—The motion was agreed to on tho voices. A PUBLIC STREET.

A special order passed on October sth declaring Aorangi street to be a public street came up for confirmation. A report that was to have been made not being available it was resolved that as the matter had to be confirmed at that meeting it would be better to adjourn.

BOTANICAL GARDENS RESERVE. Councillor Izard moved—“ That the Reserves Committee he instructed to report upon the cost of forming a recreation ground in that portion of the Botanical Gardens Reserve which fronts upon Glenbervio cutting.” The motion was seconded by Councillor Murdoch and carried on the voices.
