PBESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND. October 31. In the claim brought by Eugene Hulse against Dr S. A. Bull for .£2OO damages for alleged wrong diagnosis of' her adopted son’s illness, judgment was given on the merits, for defendant, with costs. The Magistrate expressed the opinion that there had been no negligence, and that the matter bad apparently been preying on plaintiff’s mind. PEILDING. October 31. Joseph Thompson, and William Ramsay, charged with burglary, have been committed for trial. On a further charge of breaking and entering, Thompson was committed for trial and Ramsay discharged. CHRISTCHURCH, October 31. The Electric Company had a successful trial run to Heatheote Bridge, five miles on the route to Sumner, tins morning. The Greater Christchurch Sub-commit-tee, in connection with the proposed consumption sanatorium, mot to-day and decided that the sanatorium should be erected by private subscription. A plan of a division, of the city for purposes of canvass was agreed on, and it was resolved to ask various ministers to advocate the need of a sanatorium from their pulpits on a certain Sunday, and to ask sports and entertainment societies to give assistance. The meeting agreed that a three days’ collection be held at the races and show during Carnival week.
Two prisoners, who were serving sentences at Hanmcr prison camp, escaped either late last night or early this morning. Police and some of the prison warders scoured the country around the camp to-day, but failed to find any trace of the escapees. One of the men is Leonard Willis, who was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment on June Bth last. The other is James Lyndhurst, who received a twelve months’ sentence on August 30th. Both men were wearing prison clothes at the time of their escape. OAMARU. October 31. A splendid rendering of the oratorio “Elijah” was given this evening to a crowded house in aid of the Town Hall Fund. The principals were Miss Amy Murphy (Dunedin), Sliss Caldow (Wellington), the Rev T. Mitchell (Invercargill) and Mr Cookson (Christchurch. The rendering was an exceptionally good one. DUNEDIN, October 31. Anld’s drapery store in South Dunedin was burnt at 3 o’clock this morning, resulting in a total destruction, so far as the wooden portion of the building was concerned. A small brick portion was saved, but gutted. The contents were destroyed. The stock was valued at between five and six thousand. Mr Anld’s stock and fittings were insured for ,£3235 in the Royal and Standard Offices, and largely reinsured. Mr Louis Joel, the owner of the building, was insured in the Standard office for ,£1022.
