TRAMWAY EXTENSION.

PROGRESS ON THE BROOKLYN SECTION. Tho recent wet weather impeded all outside work in connection with the tramway extensions. Particularly was this the case in tho formation of the Brooklyn section, which is all rough hillside work, and fully exposed to the weather from nil points of the compass. The track to Brooklyn branches off -tho western side of the lower part of Nairn street (whore private property has bad to be acquired by the City Council), and skirling the western boundary of the Nairn slreet Plantation, pursues its way up through tho Town Belt,on a grade of 1 in 12, towards tbc south, then turning abruptlv to the wort, it crosses the face of’tho hill to Air Scagar’s property. Owing to the wet weather, the excavating had in some cases to be discontinued on account of tho difficulty experienced in getting tho drays through the muil to remove the spoil. One of tho undertakings here is to carry a track over the gully at the foot of the hill with the spoil from the cuttings. Tho drainage of tho whole hillside followed this gully, and had to he accommodated bv’ the construction of a concrete and brick culvert 167 ft long. Another culvert, 120 ft in length, is needed, too, near the back of tho Nairn street properties for the safe conduct of the hillside streamlet. The contractors, Messrs Kennedy and Duggan, had thirty-nine men working yesterday. It is not expected that the contract will bo completed in time—a month hence—but given fine weather, tho road should be completed before Christmas. Mr E. J. Uiohards is supervising the work on behalf of the City Cruncil. On account of there being no further material available for track-laying, a number of hands have had to be put off on the Island Bay section. Definite advice has been received by Duthie and Co. (contractors for the rails, etc.) that there is a quantity of material on the Gothic, due in Wellington from London next Mondav. As soon as this is available, little time will be lost in laying the rails to Iho terminus at Island Bay.
