CHARACTER OF PROHIBITIONISTS. WHAT is the character of the people advocating prohibition in Araerica?" This was a question put recently bv the representative of the “New Zealand Herald" to Mr W. B. Loffingwell, the American journalist who has just concluded a two and a half months' tnp through New Zealand. Mr Leffingwcll said: “The character of prohibitionists in America is of a semi-religious kind. . . . They intend well. . . . They have with them the ministers of the Gospel, mostly in small churches, ‘who advocate temperance at all times, and prohibition when they wish to he a bit sensational. Tn America prohibition has drifted into politics, therefore it is eschewed by the pastors of large congregations. Its loaders, those who publicly advocate it, are frequently men of disappointed ambition, men who have aspired to office in one of the dominant political parties, and, having failed in_ receiving tiio desired nomination, or in getting elected turn prohibitionist/' This is quite an apt summary of the character of the political prohibitionist in New Zealand. Ho means well, and would do good. He is disappointed in politics and wants to use prohibition as a means to his political promotion. The clergymen of the better class have been shrewd enough to observe that their churches and they themselves were being used, not so much to promote temperance, as to advance the political cause “of prohibitionist leaders. Some would yet proclaim themselves prohibitionists in the hope that they might obtain the loan of city pulpits to advance their private political interests. We know of one gentleman who has tried both sides of politics to get a seat in the House of [Representatives. He would be Tory or Whig, Conservative or Liberal (but always prohibitionist) if he could only get there. The electors generally are seeing through the prohibitionist politician, and further disappointment at the coming election is likely to be his. Moderates can never vote for tho vacillating prohibitionist, any more than they can vote for no-hccnse.
