EDUCATION BOARD.

Tho Education Board met yesterday. There wore present—Messrs W. Allan (acting-chairman), A. IT. Vile, J. Kebbell E. Foist, A. \V. Hong. M.U.R., and' W. H. Field, M.11.R. FINANCE. The financial statement showed that tlie credit balance, after paying rho accounts, would be £llsl, as against £1312 tho previous raemh. The contract liabilities are £1207. Tho payshoot. amounting to £8429, included the following items: —General, £1055 ; secondary, £207 ; manual and technical classes, £75; teachers’ salaries, £3807; buildings, £308; technical classes, £771.

WORK OF THE MONTH. The chairman reported that the South Wellington, Hukanui, and Mastcrtou District High School buildings had been commenced. Instead of changing tho position of tho Te Horo School, it had been decided to endeavour to convey the children to the present school. The deputation to Pr.hiatua had not been necessary, tho Inspector-General leaving discussed the unit ter of accommodation for the High School on tho spot with tile Board’s inspector. An application had been made for a grant for Martinborough. and for a new site for tho Jolujsouvillo School. PATRONAGE AND CANVASSING, Mr Vile moved—/‘That in future advertisements for teachers the following words be added :—‘Personal and other outside influence used with members or officials of the Board may result in disqualification.’ ’’—Seconded by Mi- Feist.

Mr Hogg pointed out that the Education Bill had been so altered in the House tho previous day that tho power of appointment was transferred from tho Boards to committees, and, therefore, tho motion was unnecessary. Tho motion was unanimously agreed to. WORKS. On the recommendation of the Works Committee the following grants wore authorisedMauricovillo West, gravel; Khandallah, half cost removal of gorse; Horocka, subsidy on contribution for purchase of school apparatus; Devin, cost of partition and blackboards.

It was decided to apply to the department for grants for a residence at Waikauae, and tho addition of two rooms and a scullery at Bidcford. A movable partition will he made between tho old and new rooms at To Horo. Tho following works were authorised to bo put in hand during the season:— Painting and repairs at Gladstone, Masterton, Mangataihoka, Kaitara, and Kaiwaiwai. The matter of repairs and painting at Mangaone was' deferred owing to tho decline of the school. Tho number of applications received for tho vacancies advertised by the Boa-d during the past month was much smaller than usual. For five positions there were no applicants, and for fivo others only one each. It was decided to adjourn until 1.30 p.m. to-day for tho further consideration of tho appointment of principal of the Training College. For the erection of a residence at Nireaha the tender of H. H. Godfrey at £lB7 15s was accepted. The lease of the old site at Nireaha was granted to the Hall, trustees for seven years at £7 per annum. For the purchase of /building and site at Eketahuna no tender was received.
