BY-ELECTIONS NO CRITERION, LONDON, October 24.
The Right Hon Henry Chaplin, Conservative M.P. for tho Sleaford division of Lincolnshire, who was a member of the Tariff Commission of 1904, speaking at Boston, said tho results of the by-clections were not connected with tho fiscal question. Tho swing of tho pendulum from the dominant party, which was almost a second law of nature, was a factor in producing the results that had talccn place. MORE PROTECTION WANTED. AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRIES. (Received August 26. 11.46 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 25. A deputation representing the Victorian Chamber of Manufacturers waited on tho Minister for Customs to-day, and urged alterations in the tariff in the direction of further protection. . They declared that a number of industries were languishing owing to the small measure of protection afforded. Sir William Lyne promised consideration of tho deputation’s views. The United States, ho thought, had tho most scientific tariff in the world, and if ho ever came to deal with the tariff ho would take the American as his ideal.
