FEAR OF SMALLPOX.

SUSPICIOUS CASE AT SHANNON. PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES. What is feared may prove to be a case of smallpox—though, fortunately, there is considerable doubt on the point —has been discovered at Shannon, in tho Mauawatu district. Tho patient is a man named Newall, who arrived at Wellington from Sydney on the steamer Monowai on July 26th. Newall developed such suspicious symptoms that Dr Kennedy, of Shannon, communi-, catod with tho authorities of the Department of Public Health at Wellington. and Dr VaEntine, Assistant Chief Medical Officer, went up to make in-, vestigations. I Dr Talintine, who returned last night, states that there is considerable doubt whether Newall suffers from smallpox, but it has been decided to be i on the safe side, and take no risks. Accordingly, tho patient and all contacts have been isolated and vaccinated, while further precaution has been taken by vaccinating school children and ’ many adults. An officer has been placed in charge of the district, and he will closely watch the case, and do everything possible to guard the public safety until observation and diagnosis reveal the real nature of tile sufferer’s complaint.
