The engineer submitted a lengthy report cu the various works enumerated in the estimates. The expenditure from July 17th to August sth amounted to ARW 16s 3d, with an estimated expenditure for the forthcoming fortnight of -£97, He also stated that a thorough test had been made of the sanitary plant erected under the direction of Air Merfield (late building inspector), and the plant worked rapidly and effectually. O Clayton, foreman of works for tho borough, tendered his resignation. The Mayor said the resignation was not tho outcome of anything that had been said in the Council. Ho moved that the resignation be accepted with regret, and that the Council place on record its appreciation pf the splendid services rendered to the Borough by Mr Clayton. The motion was carried unanimously, and on the motion of Councillor Clere, leave of absence for one month on full pay was granted. An Alicotown ratepayer waited on the Council iu reference to the drainage of Fitzhorbert street. Ho wished’ to know whether the residents had to connect their drainage up to their own boundaries, or an extra 33ft to the middle of the road to connect with tho main drain. He thought the Council should connect up to the boundaries. Tho engineer said that the cost of connection from the main drain to the owner’s boundary would amount to between ,£2 10s and £3 per house. The matter was deferred till next meeting. Another deputationist, who complained that he could not got gas laid on to his house was informed that it was not the fault of the Hutt Council—it did not control the supply.
