He was articled in .London to air CL Morris, a wellknown London architect. -Mr .Maddison commenced practice in the colony soon after his arrival. In 18/9 competitive designs were called throughout tire colonies for a town hall and municipal buildings for Christchuicii. and Mr Maddison's were placed fllast and second; He has also designed and carried out a large number of important buildings not only in Christchurch, but in other parts ol tile colony. Among those in Christchurch are the warehouse and offices of the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company, a targe block of shops at the corner of Colombo and Cashel streets occupied by Messrs McClea and Co., and Jiallantyne and Co., Mason, Struthers and Co. s, Limited, warehouse and offices, Chrystal ami Co.’s, premises occupi-

ed ty Messrs Milner and Thompson, ami Malings buildings in Worcester street. The following hotels in Christchurch were also designed and carried out by Mr J, C. Madilison :—Lancaster Park, Sunl hern Cross, Central, Clarendon, Criterion, Carlton, Foresters, Prince ol Wales. Crown, Zetland, and Al. Bosides these there are a number of large and important buildings, among them being a largo flour mill at Addington for Messrs Wood and Co.. Limited, Warden's premises, Cashel street, large additions to Manning and Co.’s brewery, Crown Brewery, buildings for Sir Westbv Percivnl, private rosidenco-s for Sir George Clifford, Messrs F. Waytnonfcb, Cecil Louisson, and a number of others. Of freezing works, Mr Maddison has designed those at Matanra, Belfast. Fairfield, Pareora, and Waitara, as well as the additions for the Wellington Meat Export Company, and is at the present time carrying out large works at Hastings, Nelson, Masterton, and Wellington, and warehouses in Christchurch. For freezing works alone during the last few years works costing £.197,000 have passed through Mr Maddison’s hands.
