Meares said an idea was prevalent that the area under root crops had enormously increased during the past few years. As a matter of fact, the area was practically tho same as five years ago, being 569,639 acres now, as against 569,07.5 in 1893. In regard to sheep, he believed the fallingoff in flocks of tho colony was righting itself. During the current year the number of ewes had increased by 150,100. having reached 10,090,041, of which 5,070,726 were in the South Island.
