REDUCTION IN THE PRICE OF COAL. HOW THE MINERS THE AFFECTED SYDNEY, September 1. Tho notices regarding tho reduction in tho price of coal have been posted in o pits. Tho Miners’ Federation intends to take legal advice on the question of reducing tho hewing rate. It was intimated on Tuesday that the Northern Colliery proprietors had decided to reduce the selling price of coal from Its to.lOsper ton, with a corresponding reduction in the hewing rate from 3s XOd to 3s 6d. The new order of things, which will come into opieratiou on the 13th inst., applies to the colliers in the Newcastle district only. . ’GREAT SHIPPING STRIKE. A NATIONAL CALAMITY. PARIS, September 1. The shipping strike at Marseilles is extending to other French ports. STEAMER FOR AUSTRALIA DELAYED.’ (Received September 3. 1.3 a.m.) SYDNEY, September 2. Advices have been received hero that tho Frond; mail steamer Dumbea will bo unable to sail from Marseilles for Australia on Wednesday owing' to the strike. The agent states that all the company’s steamers will be delayed while tho strike continues. On August 28th the dock strikers declared that unless they were granted an eight hours day, with a payment of six francs per day, the strike would extend to all French ports. MEAT-PACKERS’ STRIKE. (Received September 2, 11.39 p.m.) NEW YO Rlv, September 1 2. One hundred and fifty thousand meathandlers throughout America have joined the strikers at Chicago. Prices of meat have risen 6s per cwt.
