RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS.

NEW SOUTH WADES REPRESENTATIVE. SYDNEY, June 23. Mr W. A. Barton, son of Sir Edmund Barton, has been awarded tho Rhodes Scholarship. Commenting on the Rhodes Scholarships, the Canterbury College “Review” says that a travelling scholarship is a thing of dubious value to a young community. “To the individual,” it is stated, “the scholarship is undoubtedly an advantage, but too often he benefits at the expense of his country, which can illafl'ord. at a time when every nerve and muscle are required for its development, to send away year'by year a man of such character as would, in tho opinion of the Examining Board for the Rhodes Scholarships, guided by the directions of a keen statesman and jndgo of men, tend to produce a leader-of the people.
