. THE OIL WAR. Apropos of the recently-started war of prices amongst the kerosene kings, the following from a Melbourne newspaper will bo of especial interest in this colony;—Although the quotation for Russian kerosene in London has fallen to Sid per gallon under the stress of competition between I Russian and American interests, it does i not follow that business would be pracI ticable as an ordinary mercantile venture in the way of importing either American or Russian oil from London to Australia. The bulk of the oil on the London market is "standard white,” a description not equal to the "water white” oil imported into Australia, the Hash point for one thing being much lower, and the fire test being 25deg. less. The oil obtainable in London is in bulk, and although it might be packed into tins and cases, the expense of doing so world add : considerably to the cost, especially as this 1 expense would bo larger than in America, where tho packing is done in very large quantities on an economical basis. If it were desired to import in bulk, it would bo necessary to establish a proper organisation for the conduct of the business on a large scale, involving the expenditure of a considerable amount of capital on tanks and of distribution, in addition to getting a steamer, if obtainable. By the time everything was arranged and in working order tho conditions of tho London market might have totally changed. while the question of making use of the present disorganised state of the market to bring out a few shipments is complicated by considerations of quality and packing. It will be noted that the conflict between tli© Anglo-American Oil Company (one of the forms under which the Standard Oil Company trades) and the companies controlled by Messrs Rothschild, Sir Marcus Samuel, and the Royal Dutch Company, and represented by the Asiatic Petroleum Company, has broken out when tho days aro long in England, and when, in consequence, the consumption is light. Tho Russian oil, moreover, is inferior as an illuminant to the American oil, but superior as a fuel or lubricant.
