The pacer J.H., lormcrly owned in this district, is at present racing in Westralia. Judging by his form at Foxton, Clairi appears quite sound again, and should , run well in hurdle rapes tins winter. After running second in the Century Hurdle Race at Wanganui, Otairi got knocked out by a fall iipthc Grand National Hurdles at Ellorshe

Eminem;, who won the two-year-event on tho concluding day of the Launceston meeting, and followed up this success by appronriatiug the Juvenile Stakes at tho Tasmanian R.C. re-union, is a brown colt by imminence (sou of Bill of Portland) from Ouirassmi, by Cuirassier from Rosariua, by Xraducer. . J. Lowe has Vallance, Solution, Rino-lct and Alatuku working at tho Hutt.

Running horses out of condition has become such, a common occurrence that the practice is tolerated witnout aonuir. None tho less it is au ovil that can and ought to ho. to some extent, regulated. It is a peculiar thing that there arc owners who would not dream of “stopping’' one of their horses in the accepted sense, but they do not, at the same, time, consider it a transgression to allow their representatives to carry their colours while the animals arc still far from ready to do themselves justice. This, to say the least of it is rather in ■ consistent It is quite probable that in many cases no harm is meant by. or comes of, giving .a horse a public outing while ho is still unfit to back, but it is t> bo feared that tiiis is a method often adopted to put tho handicapper off his guard. And, unfortunately, the ruse too often succeed. Even when nothing of tho sort is intended, or oven thought of, it is not a sportsmanlike action to start a fat, horse. Loch Tay (Lakeshell—Pointeettia.) is in training at the Hutt. T. Wilson arrived at Egmont on Fid day last to ride Catspaw at tho West Coast meetings. Air J. R. Nicol lias been appointed a vice-president and timekeeper of the South Wairarapa Trotting Club. Messrs H. Brinkman and W. Armstrong have been appointed handicappors to tho club. As Air Brinkman does net attend any trotting meetings in this district, the idea ot appointing Mr Armstrong is a good one.

Tradewind has been fold, and wi'l leave for Sydney in a few weeks on his way to South Africa. A. Shoarsby wil 1 take Tradewind to 'Taranaki, with Wcstguard and Louisa. The new owner of Tradewind is Air I l '. Pratt, who got tho Soti’-wester gelding at the reasonable figure of 300 guineas. J. Mr F. N. Jones, the well-known totalizator proprietor,’ of Kelson, has been in Wellington for tho past fort, night, arranging and completing details foi tho construction of a now up-to date 18-horso totalisator. The work has been entrusted to Messrs Jenkins and Mack, of Lambton quay, and the machine will ho made on “Jenkins’s Patent” principle, embracing, also, improvements suggested by Mr Jones. The totalisator is to bo finished by next November, and* will bo a very superior piece of machinery. Tho name of Tomirangi has been claimed for tho Alahaki-Waiau filly which raced at Foxton and Pahiatua as Tangiwai. Tho native moaning of Tomirangi is dew on the grass. After acting as honorary starter to the Otaki-Alaorl Racing Club since its formation, twenty years ago. Air Ho.’i to Warn has resigned that position. Last season tho club recognised Air Waru’s services by presenting him with a gold watch. Air C. O’Connor, of Christchurch, who acts for tho Horowhenin. All- T. Scott will probably be represented in steeplechase events this season by Hutana and Plain Bill. Tho latter is reported to have thrown off all signs of nnsoundness, which interrupted his lacing career on several occasions. Pit and well, there is no doubt about the Flintlock gelding being able to hold Ills own with the best over big fences. J. Cameron will ride for Air Scott when his services are available.

Under a law recently enacted in America, you can recover money lost by betting. Tho “Sportsman’s” New York correspondent wrote on 9: —“A betting case has been decided this week —one of tho first under the Percy-Gray law, which enacts that a. bettor can sue for and recover any money lost in a bet. Tho case was Moulton v. Torpio. Aloulton is an agent of Peter Do Lacy, the poolroomkeeper, who is always fighting '.ha racing associations and trying to make things unpleasant for them. He lost

a bet of SOdol. to a certain bookmaker, Torpio at the Westchester Association’s i. teting at Morris Park this summer and thereupon sued both Torpio and tlic association to recover his money. Tho Judge dismissed both complaints, and tho case was then appealed to tho Appellate Court. The three Judges sustained tho decision of tho_ lower Court in dismissing tiro case against the association, .since, as they said, the association were not parties to tho transaction. But they overruled tho decision given in favour of tho oookmakcr, and pronounced m favour of the pliantiff. This was made an excuse for big headlines by tho evening papers,, which prophesied the prompt disintoglat’.on of tho turf. But thero_ was nothing new about tho decision. Bookmakers have known all along that under tho Percy-Gray taw a man could recover a bet from them if ho choso to bring suit. What they gamble on is that no man would be mean enough to bring suit, or so devoid of manly feeling as to try to recover a lost bet m such a fafiiion. This man (Aloulton) would not have done so. but ho was being used as an agent of lie Lacy.” On January 23rd iur Jas. Scobie, the well-known Ballarat trainer. was thrown from his buggy, and sustained fractures of his right collarbone and left thigh. J. Rao. the Auckland trainer, will be represented 'at rno West Coast meetings by Waipuna. who won a double at Eiioiwlie. D. AI. Sutherland, owner of Sans Pour, was lined £25 bv tho Alontone stewards for using grossly insulting words to Air R. K. Alaitlaud, mo V.A.T.C. handicapper. Southern Gross, winner of Die Launceston Cup, was ridden by E. McCcinbo, brother to J. AlcCombo. After doing a season at the stud Diplomat (Stepniak—Adulation) has been pub into work at Levin. H. Fletcher has leased a now stable built by tho Horowhonua Racing Club alongside the racecourse at Levin. The stable consists of ten roomy boxes, a feed house and boys’ room. The present occupants arc Livonia, who- never looked bettor during any part of her racing career; tho Dauber, the two-year-old bay fitly Possib.lity (by Tho Possible) a half-sister to Bounce, who may bo raced at tho Napier Park meeting next month; a two-year-old hay gelding by Euroclydon, half-brother to Betsy and two-year-old chestnut filly by tho same sire, half-sister to Ostiak. A Lovin patron of. Fletcher’s is sending him a four-year-old sister to Plaidio and Pokeka. All tho horses look well and should reward thevr trainer with a few wins during the season. Fletcher is having a five-roomed house built handy to 'the stable. Ho recently joined the ranks of the benedicts and I take'this opportunity of wishing him and his bettor half a happy and prosperous career. Betsy and Dodona are at present running out at their owner’s x>lace at the Hutt.
