miTLOTMEXT OF CHINESE. MEETING OP PROTEST IX LONDON LONDON pcbruary 11. :V large meeting was held in tho' Queen’s Hall to protest against tho importation of Chinese labour into tho Transvaal. Lord Carrington presided. Sir William Harcourt, member lor West Monmouthshire, in apologising for his absence, wroxe a letter protesting against tho establishment of serfdom m tho Transvaal, which, ho said, was calculated to lower tho proud titlo of tho British colony in the world’s estimation. Tho future or tho colony was being aicrineed to the impatient greed of gold speculators, and it was impossible to contemplate such a reactionary policy without indignation and disgust. Tho chairman said it was necessary that such an Act as proposed should bo well thought out Imperially. Ho recalled tho action of New South Wales yx 18SS in resisting the lauding of coolies in Sydney. Sir T. Buxton moved a motion protesting against tho importation of Chinese without tho formal consent of the people of tho colony. The question was. ho said, not purely local, but also Imijerial. . Replying to a question in the House of Lords, tho Marquis of Rilpon. said ho was confident general opinion in South Africa favoured the employment of Chinese. The Archbishop of Canterbury said there was a danger of the policy developing serious moral and social evils.
