COURSING

(By Go-Bye). Tho Australian Waterloo Cup, the blue ribbon of the leash ,was decided at Rooty Hill enclosure on Juno 17th, 18th and 19tb, and tho final resulted as follows : —'Mr Edward O’Connor’s Kilronan, by Kilmainham—Flora, beat Messrs Hadles’s Great Heart, by Lindsay Gordon—Gipsy Queen. Kilronan is a second season dog, and was the sole representative from Queensland. He raced last year unplaced in the N.S.W. St. Leger. About a fortnight before the Cup meeting, the son of Kilmainham' and Flora, when at exorcise, got on to a stray hare, and had a loug race on a hard road, with tho result that ho knocked a toe-nail out of a fore foot, and badly cut the pad of a hind foot. This fact must have had some influence on his starting price, as 100 to 4 was offered against his chances in tho Cup. Great Heart, the runner-up, hails from New Smith Wales, and is a very consistent performer. He won the New South Wales Grand Challenge Stakes last year, and won the Orange Cup last month. The final of the Waterloo Plate, for 10 dogs I eaten in tho first ties of tho Cup, was won by Messrs Kelly Bros.’ (Victoria) Tho Tribune, who beat Murray and Wren’s (N.S.W.) Lo Soliel.

Mr H. V. Foy, of New South Wales, who imported from England tho dogs Warranted and Waterproof, by Mellor Moor—Reciprocity and White Bead, by Under the Globe—Myrtle Flower,: entertained the inter-State visitors at the Waterloo 1 Cup meeting last week. The party was taken in Mr Foy’s steamer to the Quarantine Station, where the dogs aro quartered, according to law, for a certain period before bein gallowed to land.

At the luncheon Mr Foy offered Mr R. Coombos, the president of tho New South Wales National Coursing Association, tlio sum of £IOO, to bo added to the next Grand Challenge Stake, to bo run under the auspices of tiny association. In 'accepting the same, Mr Coombes warmly thanked Mr Foy for his generosity. Tho announcement was received with great applause. There wore 42 starters in the Australian Waterloo Cup this year. At a meeting of the Wairarapa Coursing Club, held last week, it was decided to run off a stake in August next. Mr O’Connel, tho president of the club, has generously donated a trophy value 10 guineas, to tho winner. Dean McKenna, of Mastertou, has given the Wairarapa Club tho use of a large paddock, free of charge, for the purposes of coursing. I wish the newly-formed club every success, and as there is some good sports in the district, there is no reason why coursing should not take a strong bold in tho Wairarapa.

The Wellington and Suburban Coursing Club are making soma very good improvements on their ground at Trcntham. Tbo escapes have been widened about another 80 yards, and according to the way the hares ran at their Birthday Meeting, there should be a very small percentage of kills at tho Cup meeting. I am informed by M r Davies, tho bon. secretary of the Wellington and Suburban Coursing Club, that nominations aro already coming in for the Wellington Cup, to be decided on August 26tb next, at the Trentham enclosure. Tho first nomination to arrive was from Kawhia, 140 miles north of Auckland, and the second ono was from Invercargill (two extremes). Lavender Water, by Frisky Lad '■M(inp.){—Sweetwater, arrived in Wellington on Sunday last. The bitch has been secured for breeding purposes by Messrs Davies and Guilford, of this city. The first coursing meeting that has been held in, Rangitata (Canterbury) for a number of years took place last week, and resulted as follows:—Rangitata Plate, tor 12 dogs (winner £ls, runner-up £5, third dog £3., two dogs £1 each). —First Round: Austral beat Persimmon, Erin-go-Bragh beat Nellie Moore, Frisky Boy beat Roger, Red Runner beat Maximite, Cruciform beat Eau-de-Cologne, Royal Rose beat Maxim. Second Round: Austral beat Frisky Boy, Erin-go-Bragb beat Red Runner, Cruciform beat Royal Rose. •Third Round: Austral beat Cruciform, Erin-go-Bragh a bye. Final; Mr J. McAuliffo’s f and wd Austral and Sir J. McAnliffe’s b and wd Erin-go-Bragh divided' the stake. • It will bo remembered that Austral won the Trentham Plate at the Wellington Birthday Meeting at Trentham on June 6th.

I notice that a dog named Maxim was running afßangitaca last week. This cannot bo tho Hawke’s Bay 'Mixing who is very old, and whose stock is racing so well this season. It is time that the duplication of names was put a stop to, and tho National Conference to be held in Wellington next .August could very well make a note of this item.

The Dunedin Coursing Club’s Maiden Stake, advertised to be decided on Juno 24th, has been postponed for a second time. No notification was received in Wellington until after the date advertised for the Stake to bo run. Should by chance any Wellington coursers have gone down to Dunedin for tho Stake,

they would have had their journey for nothing. The ‘ secretary of the Dancdi?i Club has been very remiss, and in future owners will light shy of Dunedin. ;

Mr Macready, of Aucklandj has tried a very doubtful experiment with two of his hounds. TTo lias mated Springwater and Lavender Water, full brother and sister. He informs me that the progeny are very healthy, and are as good pups as ever a man wishes to see. Their career will be watched with interest by coursing men.
