- -I ".'- ' (By “The Jebusite.”) An English exchange of recent date states that at the City of London Court, before Judge Rentoul. Mr S. Chesters, solicitor, applied for ■ leave to issue a judgment summons against Mr A. O. Jones, secretary of the Notts. Cricket Club. Mr Chesters stated that the defendant was a member who went to Australia in the tour of 1901-2, and he was sued by Messrs Lewin. hosiers, of Crooked Lane, for 4115 Is 6d for goods sold to him for that tour. Judgment had already obtained for that amount, and he how applied for leave to issue a judgment jUHUiions against-him. IJe was secretary of; the Notts, club, for which office ho received '41230 per annum. The application was granted. The English County fixtures this week are Middlesex v. Gloucestershire, Nutts, v Leicestershire. Lancashire v. Sussex, Worcestershire v. Yorkshire, Essex v. Surrey and Surrey v. Gloucestershire. Tho two first-named counties last season faced each other as usual on two occasions during the summer. The earlier fixture was drawn on account of rain. A notable absentee in this match was P, E. 'Warner, who made his presence felt in tho second fixture. On this occasion he scored 109 by lively cricket, which included 13 fourers. Bosanquet was at the wickets for the short space of 15 minutes, during which period ho knocked up 32. A'.’E. Trott accounted for 11 of the Gloucestershire wickets for 88 runs, his side winning hands down by an innings and 67 runs. The principal scorers for Gloucestershire were Jessop 57, Eico 61 and Fowler 54,

The Notts, team will not have the services of the late lamented Arthur Shrewsbury, who headed the English batting last season with an average of 50. Notts, won the second match easily by 181 run a, the rain causing the earlier match to end in a draw. Before the game wag* abandoned, Shrewsbury obtained 106 not out. The Lnnea shi re-Sussex players were unable to finish their first match last season owing to the weather, which affected in a marked degree all tho earlier fixtures. There were several notable absentees from the second game, viz.:—"Ranji,” Fry and Tate (Sussex), A. C. Maclaren and Tyldesley (Lancashire). Tho Northern County gave G. Maclaren (a younger brother of "A. C.”) a trial, but the innovation was not a success. Barnes, who visited Australia with ’ McLaren's team, .was in rare buckle with the ball, and his trundling on tho third day practically won the match, no less than six of the Sussex batsmen being dismissed for 13 runs. Last season Yorkshire Gefeated AForcestershire by six wickets. The second match was drawn. The scores in this game were Yorkshire 257 and 348. Worcestershire 230. J. T. Brown, who assisted A. Ward to win for A. B. Stoddhrt’s, 1534-95 team the final test match dt Melbourne, showed a glimpse of his

true form against the Worcester trun-d----lers. Ho 'stored 76 and 91, and his batting was a distinct feature of the match. K. Arnold saved Worcester from defeat by a. capital innings of 92. In tho Australian fixture last season he obtained 38. K. Abel scored two three-figure totals against Ivssox last season. In the first match he compiled 101 on a bowlers’ wicket, and later in the season was credited with a total of 150. The remaining ten Surrey batsmen in this innings only totalled 112 runs between them. Lockwood coHa rest 9 wickets tor 59 runs. C. MeGahey (Essex! was in good form with bat and ball; He scored 79 and .secured i wickets for 39 runs.
