CRIMINAL TRIALS.
CONVICTIONS FOB SLY GROG- . SELLING. PRESS ASSOCIATION. ' HAMILTON, May 20. At To Awamutu, before Mr H. W. Northoroft, S.M., Peter Joy, of Taumaranui, was convicted on three charges of sly grog-selling, ‘William Hoots on three eliarges, George Heritage, of Taumaranui, on two charges, and Kay XvioGlynn, of Piriaka, on two charges. Defendants were sentenced to one mouth’s imprisonment on each charge, without tho option of a line. Joseph Gardiner, who had been previously convicted for similar offehces,, was entitled to have his case tried by a jury, and was committed for trial. Several informations against different persons wdro v withdrawn, and other cases were adjourned. SUPREME COURT CASES. , WANGANUI, May 29. The Supreme Court session finished this morning. Tho Chief Justice admitted Boston and Baird, who had pleaded guilty to a series of housebreaking, charges, to probation for twelve months. Charles Ross was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for perjury. The latter.was tho only sentence imposed during' tho present sittings, four prisoners being admitted to probation. DUNEDIN, May 29. At tbo Supreme Court to-day the hearing of tho charge against Ramsay and Cairns of daylight robbery near Sargood’s boot factory was concluded. Both prisoners addressed tho jury, Ramsay at some length, and with considerable effectiveness. After a retirement of four hours, the jury was unable to agree. A new trial will take place on Juno 15th. Thomas O’Keefe and Elizabeth Buckley, for robbing a man (now dead) in Jubilee Park, were sentenced to nine months and fifteen months’ imprisonment respectively.
