NAVAL DEFENCE.

THE PROPOSED TRAINING- SHIP IN NEW ZEALAND. (Received February 4, 1.10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, February 3. Tho federal Premier, Sir Edmund Barton, states that ho knows nothing of the proposal of New Zealand to obtain a training ship for boys. He is inclined to think that New Zealand is anxious to have tho services of ono of tho gunboats that will cease to bo attached to tho auxiliary squadron when tho now naval agreement conies into effect. Tho agreement, Sir Edmund says, makes no provision for a training ship for boys, so that tho fresh proposal is one that New Zealand is adopting on. its own responsibility, and not a matter -upon which tho federal Government could have anything to say.
