FATAL ACCIDENT.

THU HON. JAMES CARROLL’S . SISTER KILLED.

Mrs Elizabeth Williams, elder sister of tho Hon Jas. Carroll, was killed by a trap accident on Saturday night near Wairoa, H.B. Tlio information reached Napier last night by telephone from Wairoa. It appears from tho nows transmitted to AVellinginn that Mrs AVilliams, with Aliss Sargisson, school teacher at Havelock, was driving between six and seven o’clock Oil Saturday night to tho residence of tho former’s sister, Mrs AVhito. Miss Sargisson alighted to open a gate leading into a paddock through which tho 4io-u.se is reached. The horso bectuno frightened—presumably at some horses which were galloping about the paddock—and immediately bolted. Alter it had gone about ono hundred yards, Mrs AVilliams either jumped from or was thrown out of the vehicle. When picked up she was insensible and died a few minutes later. Information from Napier early this morning states that an inquest was held yesterday afternoon, when tho jury returned a verdict of accidental doatn. Tho medical evidence went to show that Airs Williams died from shock. Tho deceased was about forty-eight years of ago. and leaves a family oi throe sons and two daughters. One of Tier sons is in the Native Officio in t-liis city Another holds a position at Gisborne Tho Hon Jas Carroll left AVollington at a few minutes’ notice last evening by special train. Immediately on in, arrival at Napier early, this morning he was to leave by the steamer Tangaroa for Wairoa to attend his sister’s funeral. ■
