CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING AT ' WANGANUI. PHESS ASSOCIATION. WANGAN Ul, January 2a. Tho Caledonian championship meeting was commenc'd here i.o-day in glorious weather. A very largo number of people were present, and thero was a record attendance of Highlanders and pipers. Results:— 100yds.—First heat—A. Watts 1, F. McCulloch 2. Foui others ran. Won easily. Time, lOsee. Second heat —Iv. Webster 1, C. E. Craig 2. Two others ran. A close finish. Time, 10 l-sscc. Third heat —C. Williams 1, P. O'Connor 2. Two other starters. A good race. Time, 10 1-oscc. Final—A. W. Watts (Syds) 1, C. Williams' (syds) 2. A good race, i hough' held ,in hand throughout by Walts, who won easily by eight yards. Half-mile Cycle.—First heat—H. Lloyd ], M. Brunette 2. Six starters.--' Won by half a wheel. Time, Imia 8 1-usoc. Second boat—C. J. Breed 1, F. Nattrass 2. Time, Imin lOsec. Third heat—W. Tierney 1, A. Hayward 2. Final—H. Lloyd 1, W. Draffin 2, W. Tierney 3. When turning tho first bond Nattrass fell. Lloyd and Draffin wore leading when tho post was passed for tho first time. From that point Lloyd took tho lead, and though closely pursued by Draffin, won by a coupio of wheels.

High Jump Championship. —Toro (6ft Sin) I, C. Sheehan (sft din) 2, C. Chubbin (oft 2in) 3. 830yds Flat Championship. D. Smith 1, A. Campbell 2, L. Ward 3. The, only starters. This race was tho best of good things for Smith, who had it won all tho way. Time, 2rain 4sec. 440yds Handicap.—lS. J. Williams (12yds) 1, G. Remington (3-lyds) 2, J. Graham (2Gyds) 3. Eight started. Tho men wero bunched till tho turn for home, when tho scratch man, who had been coming up strongly from the start, wont to the front, and, maintaining liis advantage, won by about three yards, Graham about tho same distance) away, third. Time, 53 l-sscc. Highland Fling.—McKenzie Forbes 1, J. McKoohnio '2, A. Kilgour 3. 100yds Flat Championship.—L. J. Furrie 1. A. E. Wilton 2, F. Somers 3. Brandon also started. A splendid start was effected, Furxie, after the ffrst few strides, forged to tho front, and after a good raco won by about four yards, Somers, close up, third. Brandon was outclassed.

'Throwing tho Hammer Championship.—Carlson (02ft lllin) 1, McCulloch (80ft Biu) 2, McDowell (74ft Sin) 3. Wrestling (collar and elbow).—Carlson 1, Wyett 2. Those wore the only competitors. The contest proved an easy victory'for Carlson. Bagpipe Music (strathspeys and reels). —J. McKechnio 1, Morrison 2, D. Campbell 3. The other competitors wero McTavish, Raeburn, Sutherland and McKay. 440yds Championship.—L. J. Furrio 1, P. O’Connor 2, F. Somers 3. Only tho trio started. From a capital sendoff tho men raced together for tho first hundred and fifty yards, when O’Connor drew to tho front, and soon had a lead of some ten or twelve yards. On entering the straight, Furrio cams with a fine run, and got on even terms with O’Connor. A splendid race down tho straight resulted in Furrio reaching the tape just in front of O’Connor, who had run a capital race. Time, 51 4-ssec.

Two-milo Wheel Race Handicap.— First heat—E. A. Thomas 1, T. Kirkwood 2, M. Brunette 3. Second heat— A. W. Humphries 1. O. Breed 2. Final —M. Brunette (60yds) 1, W. Tierney (scr) 2, A. W. Humphries (20yds) 3. Eight started. A splendid finish, about half a length separating first and second.

120 yds Hurdles Championship.—A. W. Watts 1. B. T. Murray 2. Toro 3. Eight started. From a good start the field raced together over the first hurdle, hut at that point Watts drew ahead, and, jumping beautifully, maintained his lead. At the last hurdle Murray came at him, hut _could not get abreast of him. Watts winning with a couple of yards to spare. “Time, Imin 7 2-ssec. (While doing his preliminary Murray had the misfortune to strike lua knee, consequently ho was somewhat handicapped.) 100yds Flat Handicap (amateur).— Stubbs (3yds) 1, E. J. Williams (Byds) 2. T. B. Slipper (7yds) 3. Ten started. For breaking away, the scratch man (B. Webster) was penalised 2yds behind scratch. Stubbs ran a fine race, and won with about three-quarters of a yard to spare. Time, 10 l-ssec. Putting the Shot Championship.— Carlson (42ft Bin) 1, McDowell (32ft 4!,in) 2, Frew (31ft) 3. Carlson’s performance constitutes a record. 440yds Flat Handicap.—D. J. Fiirrio (10yds) 1, J. W. Patterson (15yds) 2, F. M. McCulloch (22yds) 3. The field, numbering ten, were sent away well, and ran together to the hack of the course, where Furrie and Patterson made an effort to take the lead. A splendid race between the two resulted in Furrie winning on the tape. Time, 50 4-ssec. Wrestling (Border style) Championship.—Carlson 1, Frew 2. One-mile Flat Handicap.—D. Smith (scr) 1. L. Ward (35yds) 2. D. Reuhe (100yds) 3. Five started. At the ringing of the lap hell there were only Smith and Ward left. Reuhe being hopelessly out of it, while Spurdle had thrown tup the sponge. Smith made a great race for the last quarter, and though his opponent was some fifty yards behind him, he finished with » splendid sprint. His tune was 4mra 25sec, which is the Hew Zealand record under the Caledonian rules. Girls’ Race (under ten years).—Townsend 1. Kench 2, Seconi 3. At the conclusion of yesterday’s programme the Dannevirke Athletic Club was leading for the banner, with 65 points, with the Empire City Athletic Club, 49 points, second.
