VICTORIA COLLEGE.

THE QUEEN’S SCHOLARSHIPS

REPORT OP THE EXAMINER. Mr T. W. Rowe, M.A., in bis report to the Victoria College Council on tho recent Queen’s Scholarship examinations (the winners of which were announced yesterday morning), says:— The examination as a whole does not call for very detailed remark. While a considerable number had, as usual, no excuse whatever for submitting themselves for such an examination, there was a larger number than usual of really good papers, and there was a keen contest for the lowest places iu the scholarship list. A glance at the list of marks will show that four candidates were separated by only 11 marks (1477 to 1466), that is, by about i- per cent. Tho English, generally, was satisfactory, the composition as a whole was good; the paraphrasing of tho best candidates was very good. Parsing and analysis still is capable of some improvement. The spelling, not only iu the set exercise, but throughout the papers generally, does not seem to me to ho so good as it ought to he. The writing generally‘ was good. A bettor stylo of handwriting prevails than that which was common three or four years ago; tho characters were clear and wellformed, while tho papers generally were neat and well-arranged. Much of tho work in arithmetic was very good, but there was a rather large number of candidates whose work in this subject was weak. In history, also, a. good many of the papers were poor; on tho other hand, some of tho best papers were very good. Considering the limited extent of the syllabus in this subject, I hardly think that there can ho excuse for the work of tho weaker candidates; Tho geography seemed to mo to he considerably better than in previous years. Several of the questions were answered exceedingly well. The least satisfactory part of the answers was that relating to local time. I .think, too, that tho map-drawing might have been somewhat bettor. Tho science generally was again excellent. Papers wero sot in botany, chemistry, domestic eoonpmy, physics and physiology. But few candidates took botany or physics. Of the other three subjects, chemistry and domestic economy wero taken chiefly by tho candidates who sat at Wellington, and physiology by those who sat elsewhere. While, as I have said, the work generally was excellent, the physiology was especially worthy of praise. In drawing, candidates were allowed to choose for examination two out of three branches, freehand, model and practical solid geometry. All chose freehand, and, as usual, the work of the best candidates was good. For the second paper, nearly all the candidates chose model drawing. While there was tho usual proportion of poor copies, the best papers showed a satisfactory acquaintance with the elementary principles of Four candidates chose elementary solid geometry. Of these only one knew anything of the subject. Tho following aro the names of those who qualified in order of merit (the first
