THE DEATH OF LOTTIE AN CELL. Ki’ECiiii to tub “ Titles.” NAPIER, December 1. Xlio preliminary nearing of ihe charge of murder against T. F. Mouro and Mary Aim Mills in connection with thu death at Waipawa of Lottie Aucell was concluded at thu Magistrate’s Court this afternoon. Tlio policu desired to call a girl whoso address had become known to them when Moore’s correspondence .was seized and on whom it was alleged an illegal operation had been performed by Moore some months ago. Argument took place on tho matter in camera. The Magistrate puled the evidence inadmissible. Detective Marsack stated that the prisoner Mills had said to him after Moore’s arrest, ‘T had nothing to do with it. It’s him that used to do that, not me.” Referring to tho evidence given by her at the inquest, she sard to tho detective, ‘T know I told lies, but I did it tp screen him. - Please, don’t arrest mo for my granddaughter’s sake.”

Mrs Mills bad signed a document at Waipawa in the presonco ct the police detailing what sho knew of the affair. The Crown Prosecutor and counsel tor accused agreed that the statement should ho road publicly in order that tho caso might bo prejudged. Mr Lusk declared that the statement had been obtained by threats and promises on tho part of the inspector of police. Ho said ho intended mentioning tho matter in tho Higher Court. Dotectivo Marsack, in his evidence, said no promise or inducement had been given to Mrs Mills to say what sho did in tho signed document. Tho accused, who reserved their defence, were committed for trial. Counsel's request for bail for Moore, whoso health, ho said, was in a most precarious condition, and who would not see tho Supreme Court if ho had to await trial in gaol, was refused. A similar application in tho caso of tho female prisoner was also declined, tho Magistrate stating that tho case was too serious for him to grant bail.
