MELROSE AND THE CUT. Tho Mayer of Melrose informed the Borough Council last night that at. five o’clock that evening a communication had been received from Councillor Dovino (of. tho City. Council) intimating that that Councillor had been authorised to settle with tho Mayor of Melrose (Mr Keene) any questions that had been m dispute regarding the preliminary stops to achieving a Greater Wellington. A discussion took place amongst tho Melrose Councillors regarding a petition sent in to g former mooting asking for tho taking of a poll of ratepayers ou tho question' of entering into tho city without any formal agreement, in respect to which a legal opinion had been given that tho petition was not in nlf respects formal. Therefore it was suggested that tho request bo hold over pending tho setting in order of the three sheets that wore informal. Councillors Brown and Jorgensen objected to the matter being hold over because of a mere quibble, the former Councillor pointing out that only a few signatories were affected by the omission deemed to be an informality. Tho Mayor regretted the action of ratepayers who pressed for a poll irrespective of au agreement, especially now when there was only one clause ‘of tho agreement in dispute between tho two Councils. Eventually Councillor Jennings moved, on behalf of Councillor Jorgenson, that tho opinion of tho Melrose Counoii’s solicitor bo obtained in writing, and forwarded to tho petitioners, so that they might put their petition in order and havo the matter of amalgamation settled as soon as possible. At tho same time,- Councillor Jorgensen made clear his opinion that it wonld oo much preferable to .enter the city under an agreement. Ho, however, felt tlin; it was high time some urgency was shown by tho Council in facilitating th 0 wishes expressed by the ratepayers of tho borough. Tho motion was agreed to unanimously- •
