SWIMMING.

WELLINGTON AMATEUR CLUB’S CARNIVAL. 'injfir.n Never in the local history of swimming sports has there been such a large gathering as that which attended the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club’s carnival on Saturday afternoon at the Queen’s Wiiarf. About two thousand people were present, the chief attraction being the Australian swimmers, who gave a fine exhibition of swimming, and diving. Owing- to the Warrimoo leaving for Sydney at 4 o’clock the Australians wore unable to start in either the 220'yards Austral lasian Handicap or the Teams’ Race. Nevertheless, they pleased, the public, and were accorded a good send-off. F. Gailey (Queensland) won the 100yds Handicap, and came second in the 50yds Handicap. Since his arrival in the colony, Gailey has improved wonderfully, and his exhibition met with hearty cheering from the spectators. M. Champion won the 220yds Handicap without exerting himself, there being only three starters. More discretion might have been shown by the handicapper in the Teams’ Race, the Wellington Club being asked to do too much. Mr E. Wetzel, manager of the Australian team, prior to leaving, thanked the load swimmers for .the way they had treated the Australians, and said the visitors would cver remember Wellingtonians for their sportsmanlike disposition. The Only thing he regretted was that George Read was returning to Australia without having ap, preprinted any of the championships. The Gothic was placed at the disposal ! *of the Wellington Club for the use of spectators, and to Captain Kidley and ' his officers the club’s thanks are due.
