MASTERTON.
THE MEDICAL SCANDAL. A NEW COMPLICATION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent. - ) Tuesday, 7.5 p.m. It may be remembered that in connection with the recent medical scandal Dr W. H. Hosking wrote to tho local paper making certain inferential charges against tho conduct of the hospital. Tho Hospital Trustees subsequently met and after full deliberation decided to increase the salary of the present med> cal staff officer to £250 per annum, on the implied understanding that he would procure the services of another doctor, so that one would always he 1 available for the institution. A member of the District Hospital Board has now intimated his intention of moving that tho demand of the Hospital Trustees for an increased grant he not conceded. A further interesting development has now occurred, the Eketahuna Countv Council having requested Dr Hoskiiig to represent it on the District Hosnital Board. It is not yet known whether Dr Hosking will accept tho position. Quite a number of Mastertonians intend to proceed to the Palmerston North Show to-morrow. A quantity of show stock loft Masterton by an early train this morning for Palmerston North. The bridge over the Mangatamoka river at Stirling, near Eketahuna. will be completed at the end of the present week. The approaches have yet to he made. The bridge will bo officially opened on December 6th, when at least one Minister of the Crown will he present. An old soldier, John Smith, died in Magterton yesterday. Deceased, who was over eighty years of age, had seen much active service, and holds medals for the Crimea and other campaigns. He joined H.M.S. Vindictive at Woolwich in 1845, and served three and a half years under Sir Charles Napier. He came to New Zealand in 1863, and served in tho Maori war, being at the massacre at Poverty Bay. He holds the New Zealand war medal. Mr Smith was an old age pensioner. He had been in failing health for some time, and was latterly in receipt of aid from the Benevolent Society. On Friday last Mr Waterworth, engineer to the Napier Borough Council, visited and inspected the outfall of the Masterton sewerage works and septic tank system, with which ho expressed himself highly pleased. On Saturday Mr Waterworth. accompanied by Mr Jickoll (engineer for the Pet one Borough-) and several residents o£ Petone
inspected the water supply works. wore all delighted with the complete no.-.s of the arrangements.
