MEETINGS.
At a well-attended meeting of Socialists held at Petone on Monday night, it was resolved to form a local branch of the New Zealand Socialist Party, all present handing in their names as members. The Wellington constitution was adopted, the chairman. secretary and committee ot three elected, and arrangements made for a vigorous propaganda. After t brief discussion on the policy of the party, it was unanimously resolved that while adhering to the announced policy of rigid independence, the branch should work as far as possible amicably with other progressive organisations. The Wellington secretary announced that a manifesto dealing with the programme and policy of the party was being prepared, that a large supply of Socialist literature would shortly be available, and that steps were being taken to organise in other centres. The annua! meeting of Te Aro branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation of New Zealand was held in the Druids Hall, Taranaki street, on Monday, 19tb of August, 1901. The president, Mr F. McFarland, was in the chair. There was a very fair attendance and several new mem. bers were proposed and elected. The following officers were elected for the en. suing year:—President. Sir P. MoParlancf (re-elected); treasurer, Mr F. McLeod (reelected); secretary, Mr P. M. Moroney (to. elected): delegate, Mrs Player (re.elected). The Benevolent Trustee* met yesterday.' Present—The Rev .T. K. Elliott (chairman), Messrs W, A. Evans, Geo. Webb. H. Cook', R. L. Mothes, D. Robertson and A. Sample. The number of inmates at tho Ohiro Home was stated to be:—Females, 17; males, 46: total, 63. The ‘ usual routine business was discharged and a number of applications for relief dealt with.
