rUESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, August 20. At a public meeting this evening, it was decided that it was desirable to suitably and substantially recognise the services rendered to the patriotic and other movements by Mr 11. Chisholm during his sixteen months in office as Mayor, A strong committee was set up to give effect to the resolution. At a meeting of tho local committee of the Incorporated Institute of Accountants, a resolution was passed strongly objecting to clause 25 of the Companies Bill providing for the appointment of the Official Assignee as official liquidator of all companies wound up by the Court, and especially to further amendments proposed by Sir Joseph Ward, providing for tho auditing of the accounts of all companies by a Government auditor. It was held that this would be a great injustice to practising accountants who have qualified in the profession by years of ex--perience and examination, and whose business and living would be taken away. It was also resolved to request tho Minister to delay any alteration of the Companies Act as affecting mining companies until careful inquiries have been made and evidence taken from those qualified to speak from experience of the working of the present Act. Mr Peter Barr was elected a co-dele-gate with Mr W. Brown to the annual meeting of the institute in Wellington. A case brought by the Tomahawk Road Board against the Ocean Beach Domain Board, for not abating a nuisance caused by the deposit of nightsqil in the sand on the Domain, was dismissed on the ground that a requisition served on the Board was not properly authorised, James Boyle, of the Royal Field An tillery, who deserted when the Imperial troops visited Dunedin, gave him. self up at the Police Station last evening, stating that ho was not to earn a living. Ho appeared at the Police Court tosday and was remanded. Charlotte Bradbury was committed for trial to-day on a charge of using an instrument on an unmarried woman. AUCKLAND, August 20.

The American schooner Helen M. Kimtall was total! wrecked at rannin Island on June 28th. Particulars by the mail steamer Sierra show that while the vessel was attemptin'* to haul out from her moorings the hawser parted and the vessel was carried on a reef. The crew got ashore safely. Hearing of the charge of manslaughter hy means of an illegal operation against Dr Wilkins was continued to* day. The accused Wilkins in his evidence emphatically denied the charge, aniT witnesses were called for the defence for the purpose of accounting for the hours in the afternoon during'which the operation waa alleged to have been performed. After several hours retirement the jury announced that they could not agree and were dismissed. The case will be reheard at the next sittings of the Supremo Tlourt. TEVIARTJ. August 20.

The Hospital Board to-day passed a resolution approving the recommendations of the conference of local bodies in North! Canterbury urging the Government to establish accommodation for chronic and incurable cases which are unsufted for both general hospitals and homes for needy, and added a recommendation that provision bo also made for imbeciles, who are not fit subjects for asylums, hospitals or homes. The system of having an honorary visiting medical staff having been broken down, the Board authorised the resident medical officer to employ outside assistance when required at a fee of one guinea.
