FEILDING.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ' Saturday, 7 p.m. At the meeting of the Pohangina County Council to-day a copy of the Wellington Harbour Board Bill now before Parliament was received. It was decided to request Mr F. Y. Leth" bridge, M.H.R., to watch the interests of the county and should there be any attempt to place liability for Harbour Board rates on the county to enter an emphatic protest. No objection will bo offered to the Bill providing it does not carry with it liability for rates. Surprise was expressed at the attitude of the Government in declining to contribute to the cost of a steel suspension bridge over the Pohangina river after the Minister of Bands had inspected the site and verbally approved the proposals. The Council had thus been led to go so far as to have plans for the steel bridge prepared. However, it was decided to accept a subsidy on a wooden bridge sooner than be without one. The matter was left in the hands of Messrs Pirani and Lethbridge to arrange if possible for the Government to erect the bridge as suggested and charge half the cost to the local body interested.
